Graphics Interpretation: Read the encoding before the pattern
GMAT Graphics Interpretation questions test whether you can decode what a visual represents before you calculate or infer from it.
A chart can look obvious while hiding a changed scale, a different denominator, a cumulative measure, or two series that use separate axes.
Use the encoding audit
Before reading the trend, identify:
- Axes: What does each axis measure?
- Units: Dollars, thousands of dollars, percentage, index, count, or rate?
- Scale: Does the axis start at zero? Is it linear?
- Legend: Which series is which?
- Aggregation: Per month, cumulative, average, total, or share?
- Population and period: Which observations are included?
Only then describe the pattern.
Original example
Series A rises from an index value of 100 to 120. Series B rises from 200 units to 225 units.
- B rises by more units: 25 versus 20.
- A rises by a larger percentage: 20% versus 12.5%.
“Which rose more?” is incomplete until the question specifies absolute or relative change.
What a graph cannot prove
A scatter plot can show association. It cannot by itself establish that one variable caused the other.
A line rising after a policy change is not enough to attribute the rise to the policy. Seasonality, another intervention, or a pre-existing trend may explain it.
The valid conclusion should match what the visual encodes.
A student typed a report in two sessions. In the first session her typing rate was p pages per q minutes, and in the second session it was r pages per s minutes, where p, q, r, and s are positive. If p/q < r/s, which of the following must be between her two session rates? I. Her overall rate for the two sessions combined, (p+r)/(q+s) II. The product of the two rates, pr/(qs) III. The increase from the first rate to the second, r/s - p/q
Answer: B
The overall rate (p+r)/(q+s) is the mediant of the two rates. Because p/q < r/s, we have ps < qr. Cross-multiplication confirms p/q < (p+r)/(q+s) and (p+r)/(q+s) < r/s, so I must be between the two rates. The product pr/(qs) need not be between; for p/q = 1/4 and r/s = 1/2, the product is 1/8, below both rates. The difference r/s - p/q need not be between; for p/q = 2/5 and r/s = 3/5, the difference is 1/5, below the lower rate 2/5. Therefore only I must be between.

What Lumen looks for
Lumen reads the answer you chose, not just whether it was wrong. On a question like this it separates three things that all look identical in a score: a concept you have not met, a reasoning step that went sideways, and a correct method pointed at the wrong target. Those need three different next weeks, and only the third one is fixed by re-reading the topic.
A single answer is weak evidence and Lumen says so. It becomes a diagnosis when the same shape shows up across several questions — which is the part a page like this cannot do for you.
Common failure patterns
- Requirement Misread: reporting the level when the question asks for change
- Denominator or Base-Rate Confusion: comparing percentages or shares with different bases
- Causal Confusion: turning association into cause
- Scope Shift: extending one series, population, or time period to another
- Premature Calculation: computing before identifying the relevant comparison
What mastery looks like
You can translate every axis and series into a sentence, estimate the direction and approximate magnitude, choose the correct comparison, and state what the chart does not establish.
