A wrong answer is evidence

The same wrong answer can come from different processes.

Suppose a price rises from $80 to $92 and the question asks for the percentage increase.

The correction should depend on the cause. “Review percentages” is too broad for the first two students. “Be more careful” is useful to approximately nobody.

A laboratory has two sugar-water solutions. In Solution A the ratio of sugar (grams) to water (liters) is x/y, and in Solution B the ratio is r/s, where x, y, r, and s are positive. If x/y < r/s, which of the following must be between x/y and r/s? I. (x+r)/(y+s) II. xr/(ys) III. r/s - x/y

Answer: B

Statement I is the mediant of the two positive ratios. Since x/y < r/s, we have xs < yr. Cross-multiplication then gives x/y < (x+r)/(y+s) and (x+r)/(y+s) < r/s, so I must be between the two ratios. Statement II is the product; for x/y = 1/4 and r/s = 1/2, the product is 1/8, which is below both ratios, so II does not have to be between. Statement III is the difference; for x/y = 2/5 and r/s = 3/5, the difference is 1/5, which is below the lower ratio 2/5, so III does not have to be between. Thus only I must be between.

What Lumen looks for

Lumen reads the answer you chose, not just whether it was wrong. On a question like this it separates three things that all look identical in a score: a concept you have not met, a reasoning step that went sideways, and a correct method pointed at the wrong target. Those need three different next weeks, and only the third one is fixed by re-reading the topic.

A single answer is weak evidence and Lumen says so. It becomes a diagnosis when the same shape shows up across several questions — which is the part a page like this cannot do for you.

Interpretation

You reversed a condition, supplied an unsupported bridge, or treated association as proof of cause.

How the pieces connect

A question is not only “a percentage question” or “an assumption question.” It can also reveal a decision pattern.
